Brian is a market researcher and economist with over 18 years
of experience. Specializing in quantitative and qualitative
research to support marketing, branding/positioning and economic/business
development, Brian has worked as an advisor and project manager
with regional, national and international private and public
clients in a broad range of industry sectors that includes tourism,
the environment, engineering, retail, financial services, demography,
health and wellness and information technology.
Brian is a Certified Marketing Research Professional (CMRP)
and a qualified Focus Group Moderator. He holds a Master of
Arts degree in Economics (University of Toronto), and was
a PhD candidate in Epidemiology (University of Toronto). Brian
has spoken at numerous conferences and has a UNIDO methodology
publication.
He is a former member of the Canadian Tourism Commission’s
research committee, a past president of the Alberta Chapter
of the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, and
a former member of Tourism Calgary’s Board of Directors. He
currently sits as Conference Portfolio Chair for MRIA. He
is an amateur chef, and can be found awake at odd hours following
cricket from around the world.

John Larsen, Communications Specialist

John Larsen specializes in crisis & risk communications,
issues management and strategic positioning, media interview
& public speaking coaching, security & emergency services
communications. Prior to consulting in this arena, John managed
the crisis communications and issues management function for
the City of Calgary, and was an Associate Vice-President with
an international public affairs and government relations consulting
agency, where he led high-profile crisis and reputation management
accounts. He has also held senior communications positions with
various orders of government and in the corporate sector. He
was formerly the Director of a regional public affairs office
for the federal government.
John is a recognized innovator in the communications field.
He has developed issues management programs and risk / crisis
communications plans for all levels of government, for high-profile
events, and for international corporations. He has orchestrated
political campaign management at the municipal, provincial
and federal levels. John has taught business communications
and public relations at four Canadian colleges and universities;
currently teaches issues, risk and crisis management at the
University of Calgary; is on the faculty of Mount Royal College.
John has a Masters Degree in communications from the University
of Calgary, with a thesis in crisis communications and media
relations.

Colin is a marketing research/strategic planner with a quarter
of a century of experience. He has worked in the advertising
arena in North America and Europe. He is has tremendous Agency
experience - 7 years at Saatchi and Saatchi (UK), 6 at McCann-Erickson
(UK), and until recently was the Head of Planning at BBDO Canada.
Being a researcher at heart, he has taken his experience and
has begun to apply his knowledge of psychology to help solve
clients’ marketing and communications problems, for example,
using Myers Briggs as a form of consumer segmentation and applying
learning from interpersonal relationships to customer relationship
management (CRM).
He has worked on a wide range of product categories especially
on travel and tourism, financial services, packaged goods
and automotive. Previous clients include Air Canada, Ontario
Tourism Marketing Partnership, RBC, Cervus Financial, Campbell’s
Soup, Nestle Coffees, Unilever, DaimlerChrylser, Nissan, Feel
Good Cars.
Colin has a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Oxford University,
and is a member of the Marketing Research & Intelligence
Association. His main love is playing jazz bass, and is always
on the look-out for gigs.
